Trends in weather-related marine cargo insurance claims: A South African perspective

Background: Marine cargo insurance covers the loss or damage to goods while in transit. It is an important supply chain risk management tool for organisations involved international trade, especially regions where penetration low, and protection gaps are high. However, marine faces new challenges because of increasing frequency severity extreme weather events. This study focuses on case South Africa: a developing country with strategic role connecting Africa global market.Objectives: The research analyses trends, differences, seasonality weather-related claims from 2013 2022.Method: Statistical general analysis was performed master dataset 17 727 answer three questions related objectives.Results: results show that have been over past decade, creating disruptions network Africa. Furthermore, this shows higher average values follow seasonal pattern compared non-weather-related events chains Africa.Conclusion: reveals growing impact Africa.Contribution: provides practical theoretical implications managers insurers manage risks more effectively proactively contributes literature by offering empirical insights perspective, considerations future work.
